About the Dr. Banks & Dr. Cosby Youth Empowerment Center
Project YouthBuild is thankful to have had the opportunity to partner with the City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Police Department to renovate the former offices of pioneering African American medical professionals, Dr. Banks and Dr. Cosby, to create the Dr. Banks & Dr. Cosby Youth Empowerment Center.
Dr. Banks was the first African American physician to have admitting rights to Alachua General Hospital and was a founding trustee of the North Florida Regional Medical Center. Dr. Cosby was the first African American dentist to serve on the State of Florida Board of Dentistry. They shared an office for nearly 50 years providing dental and medical care to the Gainesville community. They were not only medical pioneers, but civil rights leaders of their time. They each worked tirelessly to make Gainesville a city for all. Everyone at Project YouthBuild is grateful for the work of Dr. Banks and Dr. Cosby and we are honored to help carry on their legacy.
The Dr. Banks & Dr. Cosby Youth Empowerment Center is located at 635 NW 6th Street in Gainesville and is the home to the Project YouthBuild campus. It houses the entire Project YouthBuild program complete with classrooms, computer labs, kitchen, along with an indoor/outdoor construction skills teaching lab.
